Deanie Humphrys-Dunne

  • What lead you to write?

My parents always felt I had a talent for writing, but I didn’t have the confidence until I had a strong intuition to try writing my first book about my childhood experiences on our family’s riding school.

  • What is your preferred genre to write?

I write children’s books with valuable life lessons for young readers.

  • What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work/writing?

I enjoy reading, singing and music, and spending time with my family.

  • What is one major struggle you have with writing?

I think marketing is a challenge, but I’m working on improving my skills in this area. The Advice of Beth Kallman Werner of Author Connections, has been invaluable to me.

  • What projects are you currently working on?

My sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, beautifully illustrates my books.

We are working on our first picture book, A Tractor Named Wilbur. We’re excited about this project.

  • Do you place any of your life experiences into your stories?

Yes, my book, My Life at Sweetbrier, is about my childhood at our family farm, Sweetbrier. My dad made a huge decision after he was told I’d never walk. He didn’t accept that. Instead, he taught me to ride horses and helped my dreams come true. This story encourages children that they can overcome a great deal through perseverance. I’m honored that it is a Mom’s Choice Gold Medal winner.

  • What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never give up on your goals and dreams. You can accomplish more than you imagine if you persevere.

  • What is your dream car?

A Mercedes

  • What is your favorite show/movie?

It’s a Wonderful Life
