Kevin Barrick

  • What lead you to write?

– I can’t really remember the point where I wanted to tell stories enough to actually start writing, but I do recall wanting to tell my own Scooby-Doo stories. That was the beginning of my writing adventures.

  • What is your preferred genre to write?

– I like to write fantasy. I like the ability to create everything. I control the histories; I control the world. Does that make me narcissistic?

  • What is your favorite genre to read?

– I like to read fantasy, but I also like to read speculative fiction. Particularly, I like reading about ancient civilizations, strange origin stories, and even some prophetic myths.

  • What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work/writing?

– I like to cook. In another life I would love to become a chef and started my own restaurant.

  • What is one major struggle you have with writing?

– Time. I’m a bad procrastinator and I often tell myself “Oh, what’s one more episode? You can write after this show.” or “You can write tomorrow, today is a rest day!” …every day.

  • What projects are you currently working on?

– I’m currently in the editing process of the first installment of my debut novella series. It deals with village secrets, foreboding darkness, and an ancient evil that begins to wreak havoc on the village. It goes live in June!

  • What has been one of your strongest inspirations for a story?

– Silly as it may sound, I have really enjoyed the accounts of Zechariah Stitchin regarding the origins of humanity. Not to bog anyone down, but he writes on a long series of research conducted all around the world, showing how it is very likely (at least in his summation) that we humans were DNA experiments of life forms from another planet. I take inspiration for some of my bigger stories from those ideas and theories.

  • If you had enough money to travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

– Despite recent events, I would love to travel all throughout Asia. I want to fly into China, then travel by land/ferry through neighboring countries eventually visiting Japan, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, and more!

  • What part of your writing is the most complimented?

– How I can make things vivid as if the reader were right there, seeing and feeling (emotionally and physically) everything in that passage.

  • What advice would you give to someone trying to start building their platform and market their work?

– Keep at it. Nobody will read your book if they don’t know about you. Don’t worry about low numbers at first. Once people gain exposure, then you can worry about that. Until then, keep writing and keep getting the word out!

  • What is your favorite food?

– I. Love. Pizza. Like in a gluttonous fashion. There is no other food where I would be physically ill from eating too much where I still would take another bite (or slice). I just love it!

  • What is your favorite show/movie?

– I’m currently hooked on Madam Secretary. Before that I was binge watching Fringe.
