My Review of Kakegurui

The first issue of Kakegurui by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura was a decent read. It centers around a school whose hierarchy is decided through gambling. A new student has arrived at the school and thrown everything into chaos. He spends the story attempting to fit in and figure out the social hierarchy within the school.

I like the book. The artwork was great.  For me, there wasn’t enough happening between gambling ventures. In a way, the lack of focus outside of the gambling lessened the care for the characters or story. There were a few places within the story that were pretty funny.

I have learned with anime that sometimes you have to watch more than one episode before you are hooked, but there is also the tails side of that coin that the series could keep the focus on the things that detract from interest in that story. I may look into reading the next installment sometime soon to see if it begins focusing on the characters more so than the gambling.
