Donan Berg

  • What lead you to write?

Confluence of a mother who wrote and a University of Minnesota Journalism degree where the espoused mantra was to write the great American novel.

  • What is your preferred genre to write?

Mystery heads the list, however, romance is a close second.

  • What is your favorite genre to read?

No preference. I’ve delved into multiple genres.

  • What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work/writing?

Ballroom dancing, walking, and polishing baseball and bowling trophies to retain the shined glory of an idealized past.

  • Who is your favorite author and what do you enjoy about their writing style?

Hard to say. Participating in two monthly book clubs, one mystery and one contemporary, has exposed me to multiple great authors. I’ve never listed nor rated any.

  • What is the one major struggle you have with writing?

Contemplating the right word, especially the strongest verb. Always in my mind is a teen radio speaking contest where I arrived last and finished in the same position. The next year I again arrived last, but finished first.

  • Out of all your stories, which one did you most enjoy writing?

Like one’s children, I mustn’t favor one since each radiates a unique value.

  • What projects are you currently working on?

Expansion of an inspirational romance idea that years ago landed in a contest’s winner’s circle. It’s been recast into a stronger mystery with a heartwarming romance. It was this same writing contest that spawned my One Paper Heart that won a First Place Gold Award for Romance.

  • If you had enough money to travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Ireland, land of my birth. Even if I lacked resources, I’d go anyway.

  • What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never give up. It’s the same advice I give to others whether starting or practiced.

  • What is your dream car?

A 1938 Bugatti. I’ve a huge portrait. It’s hung next to my collage of airline bag tags, tickets and such. Reminds me, I’ve traveled to every state in the United States of America.

  • What part of your writing is the most complimented?

The plot and the understanding of human motive.

  • What is your favorite mixed drink?

Equal parts Guinness Stout and Guinness Stout. Was this a trick question?
