Review of Dolores Claiborne

Dolores Claiborne, written by Stephen King, is the story of a woman under investigation for the murder of her charge, whom she was caregiver to for many years. She lays out a story of how her boss came to her demise and how she, herself, tried to save her children and herself from a drunken, abusive husband. Her tale is one of every spouse and parent’s worst nightmares.

As with other King novels, the characters were well created. You really loved and rooted for certain characters and really loved to hate others. Each character was written with certain idiosyncrasies that made them even more believable.

The style was something I have not encountered yet in all my previous reads. The entire story was a narrative and is not divided out into chapters, yet the time differences are separated with larger gaps between paragraphs.

The plot was well structured. At some places, the writing kept you on the edge of your seat. I can usually tear myself away from my reading if need be and am pretty easy going when interrupted, but not with Dolores Claiborne. My wife tried talking to me with less than 20 pages left to go and I ended up scowling and getting an attitude with her, which is not my usual reaction.

I highly recommend this story to anyone. It is one that is not within King’s usual terror level of writing. Granted there are a few spots where it could cause people to cringe, but nothing that would lend to nightmares. Definitely try and pick up a copy for yourself and feel free to comment your thoughts on the book.
