Sarah Anne Carter

  • What lead you to write?

My 4th grade teacher read some of my creative writing for class and encouraged me to write more and even enter a contest to be included in a journal. I was published in the journal and have wanted to write ever since.

  • What is your preferred genre to write?

I prefer to write contemporary fiction, but I also write some young adult novels as well.

  • What is your favorite genre to read?

My favorite genre to read is historical fiction. I love learning while I’m reading a good plot.

  • What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work/writing?

I love to read. I also help non-profits with social media and marketing. I enjoy painting, too.

  • Who is your favorite author and what do you enjoy about their writing style?

My favorite author is Richard Paul Evans. I really enjoy his stories and how the characters come alive. He’s also very quotable.

  • What is one major struggle you have with writing?

I struggle with finding time to write consistently in balance with my family and work commitments. I also have to work at showing instead of telling when I want to move the story along.

  • Out of all of your stories, which one did you most enjoy writing?

I enjoyed writing one I call Orphan Wish Island, which will be published in 2021. It’s about a young girl who stumbles upon a door in her grandma’s attic that leads to an island where an orphan can make a wish each year and hear a message from their parents.

  • What projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a contemporary fiction about a young woman who finds a job working for a newspaper in Alaska after college. She is recovering from a big breakup and has to learn to stand on her own two feet. I’m also editing a young adult dystopian novel.

  • What has been one of your strongest inspirations for a story?

Military families continue to be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice and the children left behind need to be remembered. The pictures of children holding flags at their mom or dad’s military funeral break my heart. These military families inspired The Ring.

  • Do you place any of your life experiences into your stories?

For The Ring, I used what I know about military life to create an authentic plot. However, my plots come from random ideas rather than something I’ve experienced.

  • If you had enough money to travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Ireland! I did get to travel a lot growing up, but I’m always up for going someplace I’ve never been.

  • What is your dream car?

Red BMW with black interior and a sunroof.

  • What part of your writing is the most complimented?

Many of the reviews comment on how authentic The Ring is to military life.

  • What advice would you give to someone trying to start building their platform and market their work?

Try to do at least one small thing a day. An email to a book blogger or store, a tweet, a Facebook post or a phone call by itself can seem small but doing one a day adds up.
