The Iliad

Battle of the Ages

The Iliad, written by Homer, centers around the battle of Troy that started due to the fight over Helen of Troy. It described the back and forth of both armies to gain control.

The story was good, but difficult to get through. The version I read was a translation. In the first part of the story, Homer is discussing the history of certain characters/individuals and their history with each other. Another part of the introduction to the story was discussing every leader present for the battle of Troy and who their relatives were. Homer also discussed how these individuals were connected to the battle of Thebes.

Once the fighting started, the story seemed to get easier to read and have a better flow. It got even more interesting once Achilles joined the fighting.

In its historical significance, this is a must read. It is probably one of the earliest works of Literature. I would recommend it, at minimum to say you’ve read it. I may research in the future to read an untranslated copy and see how it reads/compares to the translated version.
